It would be nice if we could know the schedule a little further ahead of time. I would also have like to see more practices later in the season as practises seemed to stop one the games got under way. |
Big thanks to all the parent volunteers who make this happen! Overall a fabulous experience. |
Senior league schedule was very inconsistent. Difficult to see growth and development with such a long time between games or practices. Often practices were the day after a game or not close to a game. Too much time between games. Teams were very imbalanced. Hard to watch a team fall apart right from the beginning of the season. Maybe a mid-season reset or something could have been done. Seemed like there weren't enough players on the senior teams. |
Thank you. |
Only downside to the season was the Jets didn't seem to be evenly matched with the other teams. It was very difficult for my son for his team to lose every game until the very end of the season. I understand this can be hard to predict at the beginning of the season, it would not stop us from signing up with Northwood again. |
IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE EITHER a SAT OR SUN OFF ONCE IN AWHILE |
I just wish the season was longer and I also felt that we did not have enough team practices this year. I think our team had 1 during the second half of the season. |
Our son was discouraged due to loosing the vast majority of games. Otherwise all was great! |
Has there been discussions about making the junior league 4-10 year olds and the senior 11-15? Seemed like many of the 11 year old 3rd liners could have played up so eliminate all the shortages with the senior league. |
My son had such an understanding and supportive coach and we are very grateful. That said, my son was quite intimidated during practices, and it was the practices that turned him off.
If the questionnaire had broken down the questions by "practices" and "games", my answers would have better reflected my son's experiences. As it stands, I felt forced to choose "4"'s, when I would have rather chosen "5"'s to reflect his game experiences, (he stopped attending practices very early on). |
I think the format of games could be tweaked a bit to allow some development for the players. I didn't find the practise time effective especially for the first line players. I think it could be improved in a few ways. Either by providing more practices early on even before teams are selected and I organized by skill level. Another option could be shortening the first few games to allow some practise time, or a combination of both. Other than that, the format is good. |
My son in the junior league really enjoyed his season. My son in the senior league didn't have as much fun due to the disparity in talent between the teams, which was immediately apparent from the beginning of the season. I think it would have been in everyone's best interest if something had been done to balance out the talent on the teams once it was clear that the teams were not created evenly. |
Going from the junior to senior league seemed like half the ice time (maybe 4 x a month instead of about 8-10) and the teams were not evenly made as they were in junior division
If teams more even, would be better experience |
I would have liked a few more games and a couple more practices if there was additional ice time available. Overall great experience with the senior league looking forward to next year. |
My son had fun playing in this league. The spirit of the league is definitely fun based and an environment that he enjoyed.. At the same time though its frustrating for me to watch half a team show up at practice and late for practice. I think the coaches should be able to enforce more discipline around that. I also think as senior players they should be changing on the fly. It would be nice to have more qualified coaches too as at time the drills there were doing were a step back for my boy for sure (he played single A hockey until this year). My other comments would be that the league communicates well but not the coaches. I was not told the play off schedule and didn't even know that Sunday's game was the championship game until another parent told me the day before. |
It would have been nice to have the practises before the game alot of times i noticed we played then practised the next day usually against the team we played against, would have made more sense to practise then play, especially when there were longer stretches of no ice time |
1) From watching how well the two senior 3 on 3 tournaments went, and based on such positive feedback from my 12 year old son, I hope the senior league will strongly consider shift on the fly for all games. It worked really well, kept the momentum of the game going, and the teams were still well-balanced. I think at the age of 11+ years of age, shifting on the fly is something the kids feel they are missing out on in this league during the regular season.
2) Would the league consider putting together an All-Star Northwood team (junior & senior) to compete in some of the tournaments with other leagues? We love NHL, but a common complaint from our three boys is that they are missing out on so many tournaments that their friends are involved in.
Overall, another great year of hockey. We recommend this league to all our friends! |
The coaching of our sons' team was great in terms of encouraging good sportsmanship, all players, etc. But it would have been great to have a bit more skills development - within the team - too. Perhaps one team practice every other week, or some way of doing a bit more higher level skills development, including teamwork skills (positioning, passing), especially with any older and/or better players, who are looking for more. The team practices our son's team did have were shared with other teams, and largely led by other teams' coaches, so they weren't able to focus on partic skills needed by individuals, or team-work within the team, etc. But overall I don't want to sound disappointed - the league, and the coaching our sons' team generally got, were both great. |
Only thing I would like to see changed if able, would be the all the games being played on weekends. The late afternoon games on Saturdays were an inconvenience because nothing else could be planned on weekends because these games were right in the middle |
More practice times should be allocated (within the availability of ice) More games(season should be short). Changes preseason and during the season should go out to the parents via a mass email. (statistics page was taken off after approx 4 games.)(new rule changes etc) |
let me say that my son was with another league and was frustrated and lacked confidence and wanted to quit hockey. since putting him in this league he has matured as a player and has shown a love for the game due to the less pressure of playing with better players and and the league emphasis on having fun rather than promoting the winning mentality...however, i do maintain there still needs to be an element of competition for weak players to develop and an opportunity for the better players to thrive and excel..overall, i was pretty impressed with the organization of games and emails that kept a list of games for the week. Additionally, i have noticed there were no incidents involving parents that were disgruntled or coaches that behaved in any appropriate manner towards the kids...very positive playing environment and will have another child switch to this league. |
It would be wonderful if you could extend the Seniors league. It would also be nice if they could change in the fly.
It was a great season!
Thank you so much! |
I have recommended the league to others & was told 3 players from grand view league were coming to northwood next year including a goalie, senior league.
Not sure how teams were chosen in the senior league, but a balance of talent would be good. Maybe more evaluation? With game play to see how everyone plays then too.
Thanks |
not enough practice time; too many games |
Really enjoyed the league and the positive environment it provides to the kids. It is really well organized. Food for thought. As much as the league is designed for fun, the competitive nature of playing games with scores and having records does blend to some kids natural competitive instincts. I know that you work hard to make teams fair and on paper it looks good but sometimes it does not work out that way. Maybe mid season changes could help as well as stacking teams with more players. It seemed that this year certain teams had a lot of players missing to the point they had first liners playing on the third line. |
I am a firm believer that the product delivered by the Northwood Hockey League is top notch! It really is family friendly hockey. While I know that access to ice was a challenge, the executive did their best to deliver an excellent season. Both my children really enjoyed playing hockey and we as parents enjoyed watching them improve. In fact, the difference from September to February was remarkable. Looking to the 2017/18 year. Thanks to everyone involved. |
Overall the experience was positive. Some suggestions to improve the senior league is that there be more team practices verses skill building practices. This would benefit the teams and build confidence between teammates, build trust between teammates and practice being in the right positions etc. For senior league, I suggest it is run like the junior league, at least 2 games every week and one practice every other week. This would require buying ice ahead of time in spring to ensure there is enough ice. For both leagues, rate players, select head coaches and then pick players blind (not knowing names etc) at least for senior league. Blind draft by skill level would result in more even teams. |
best league ever! the environment you have created for fun, family-friendly hockey is amazing. I wouldn't change anything. Keep up the great work. It's very appreciated. |
I think the format of games could be tweaked a bit to allow some development for the players. I didn't find the practise time effective especially for the first line players. Thank you to all those involved to make this league a success! Great Job!! |
I just loved the format of the December tournament for the Seniors. The kids were having fun. It was nice to see them "changing on the fly" and they did very well at it. Adding "changing on the fly" to the Senior division would be nice to see.
Also, it would be nice to see another division added after Senior. |
Although it is a recreational league kids should still be taught the basics of hockey & positional play. Team coaches had only provided continual pats on the head with no post Game discussions on how the outcome may have been different if they tried this... |
I would highly recommend this league to friends. It is a fun league for the kids and my boys have loved playing. I feel that this year, the ice time after Christmas was not enough- up to Christmas was much better. We will continue to play in NHL next year, and my oldest is really looking forward to the Senior League. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to make the season so enjoyable for all the kids. |
Our son and us enjoyed his first season with the league. He says he would like to play next season. See yous then!! I also enjoyed helping out as assistant manager when needed. :) |
Great organization. Happy to have my son learn hockey in this league |
The kids had so much fun would have enjoyed a longer season |
Wish the Senior League was shift on the fly. It was hard for my son to go back to buzzer hockey. Wish they offered hockey to older kids 14+. |
